Along the riverbanks of ancient Egypt and in the area now occupied by modern Lybia, there once existed a wild plant thought to be a giant species of fennel. This plant, called Silphium, was highly valued as a “wonder drug” of the time. Coins from that era, as well as hieroglyphs, portrayed the heart shape of its seeds – which indicates it was a plant of huge importance.

Though no one is clear on a factual reason for its extinction, some feel that it was over harvested. Some speculate that the reason the seed of the Silphium determined the modern day heart shape, was because of its possible use as ancient birth control. It is also appears that Silphium was unable to be systematically farmed, and could only survive if left to propagate in the wild.

Though this hypothesis has been surrounded in some controversy, the correlation is definite food for thought. It certainly seems to draw a strong line of tradition between the heart shape and romantic relationships.
