To Hinge or Not To Hinge, that is the question!
Many women prefer hinged hoop earrings–they are easier to open and close and have less “mechanical stuff” near the ear piercing. This is because the earring is built in two pieces, with a hinge at the bottom which virtually disappears when the earring is closed. And, the post area of the earring allows the post to simply snap into a recess in the other half of the earring. This type of post and hinge design, however, requires that the earring be a solid, rather than hollow, piece of metal in the hinge area and the post area. That means, that in fine earrings, the entire hoop will be solid gold, silver or platinum. It is not uncommon, therefore, for a single solid hoop earring, of about 25mm length, to weigh at least 3 or 4 grams, often as much as 5 or 6 grams. (For reference, a US penny weighs about 2.5 grams, a nickel about 5 grams.) In our experience, many women find that a hoop earring weighing over 2 or 3 grams is just too heavy, especially if the post is a typical 1mm thickness. These solid earrings have a nice “heft”, though, and they are very durable!
So, if you are concerned about the comfort of your hoop earring selection, consider selecting a design that uses a “snap-post closure” or “push-back” post closure for hoops in the 20-50mm size. These designs allow for the body of the earring to be made of hollow material, which allows for a much lighter earring, and as a bonus, one that costs less than a solid design! If you are looking for a smaller hoop, typically called a “huggie”, you could probably tolerate more weight in the earring. This is because the smaller size of the earring makes it “swing” less than a larger earring would. The swinging effect actually makes the earring feel heavier, so if it swings less, its weight will be more tolerable.
