There’s no question that wigs have come a very long way in terms of quality and realism. Many wigs today are undetectable when property selected and applied. There are many qualities that make a wig look realistic including the quality of the hair, the believability of the color and texture, and the fit.
European hair is desirable for some women because it is sometimes needed for a realistic hair texture or color. Although it’s absolutely possible and fun to go from straight to curly hair or from red to blonde, it’s important to remember the texture and natural color of your biological hair.
Many wig donors come from China and India. The hair from these locations is typically referred to as Remy, Yaki, and Mongolian. Although this hair is mostly very good quality, it is course in texture and often does not look as realistic as it could on fair skinned or Caucasian women. For example, while darker or olive skinned women look amazing in Remy wigs, this would be a stretch for me because I am pale with freckles and light blue eyes. My biological hair is a very fine texture and auburn in color.
You can often get Euro wigs in true blondes and reds. Most Indian and Asian donors have jet black hair which must be dyed to achieve any other color. This makes the hair more processed and course and when done improperly can effect the feel and durability of the piece.
European hair can be more expensive because there are fewer donors available, but the hair is very soft and when cared for properly will last a very long time. I have some pieces that are over two years old and still very soft and wearable. Sometimes, European hair is blended with other types to cut costs, but if there is too much course hair in a piece it will not blend well and may look a bit unrealistic.
Caring for a fine textured wig is no different from any other wig. Most times, you will be directed to use professional products sold by the company where you purchased the wig. The products will generally be very moisturizing without leaving a film on the hair.
I have had very good results on my pieces using Triple Moisture by Neutrogena. It keeps my pieces shiny and soft. Because a wig does not become saturated with sebum or natural oils from your scalp, you usually will not need to wash a wig as much as biological hair.
