It is very easy to start and maintain a number of bonsai plants during the growing season. Hoee4wever, there is only so much room in the house to over winter them. We have been using an outdoor PVC hoop cloche to over winter hardy plants for over a decade with excellent success.
A number of the trees and some of the perennials are trees and other plants salvaged from walkways, paths and new construction sites in the area. The price is right; the specimens are scared and twisted, providing interesting starting material. They are best over wintered outdoors.
Because of the small root structure and manicured branches, it is best not to expose them to harsh fall, winter and spring winds, snow, ice and drought. We begin with by preparing a an area that will be covered by a portable four by eight cloche frame made from one half inch PVC pipe. T fittings permit cutting 24 inch sections to form the base and a way to arch the 10 foot pieces to form the hoops. Before the frame is put in place, we double or triple till the area where we are going to place the cloche. Then we dig a 10 to 12 inch deep trench down the center and place a plastic sheet in the bottom and anchor the edges so we have a trough to fill with water. This provides humidity and helps moderate temperatures under the plastic.
Once the ground is ready to freeze, we take the plants out of the bonsai planters and plant them in the soil around the trench. The hoop frame goes over the plants and a sheet of plastic is placed over the frame and anchored on all four sides. A quick anchor is to cut a 1 and ½ inch pipe in half the long way and place one half on each side of the plastic and fasten with a screw or bolt every foot or two. This provides a handy anchor for the plastic and permits covering the entire perimeter with solid to seal the plants in the cloche for the winter.
When spring arrives and things begin to break bud outside the cloche, it’s time to open the frame and re-pot the plants for another season. This method has permitted us to over winter 20 to 30 plants under one cloche. The indoor plants sometimes don’t fare as well as the outdoor companions.
