The Bangkok Gems and Jewelery show takes place twice a year and remains one of the most important and sophisticated wholesale silver jewelry trade shows in the world with many truly first class manufacturers exhibiting their latest designs. Most exhibitors are very much focused on supplying large volume buyers that must place orders for 50-100 plus pieces per design.
So it is not really such a worthwhile show for independent retailers looking to buy just a few items of a particular design. While there were some exhibitors selling wholesale silver rings, pendants, earrings and other jewellery from stock we found very little that was new or exciting. And in fact found many such exhibitors using the show as a vehicle to clear old stock.
Year after year, wholesale silver jewelry seems to take up an ever larger proportion of the floor space at this show. However, this was the third show in a row where it was very apparent that visitor numbers were well down on previous years and perhaps not surprisingly most exhibitors that we spoke to were resigned to disappointing sales with most not expecting significant improvement until the 2nd half of 2010.
Trends at the show:
Plenty of new designs but with most exhibitors sticking to mostly tried and tested design concepts we were unable to identify a new or emerging design trend.
A large percentage of new designs seemed to be for plain silver jewellery especially plain silver rings with Cubic Zirconia especially clear CZ and to some extent black CZ which are both popular with Western buyers.
The move to lighter weight silver jewelery has continued with evermore lightweight designs. We noticed very few new heavy/chunky type necklace and bracelet designs.
Laser or burnished finish plain silver jewelery designs have increased in popularity.
There has been a decline in numbers of both new and existing designs using Red Coral and Mother of Pearl.
Wholesale silver jewelry with Cubic Zirconia , Black Onyx , Amethyst and Marcasite remains popular .
As reported in the trade press earlier in the year, sales of wholesale silver rings held up well at the Hong Kong Jewellery trade show in June and that seems to have continued through to the Bangkok show, especially at the under US$20.00 per piece price level.
