So what really sells in the world of costume jewelry? What follows is my experience over four year of selling over $50,000 of retail jewelry (most individual pieces ranging from $12-$48). If you are a direct seller, buyer for a store or your own jewelry designer, I wrote this article so that you can learn from my experience and experience sales success in your own arena.
As a general rule, anything with abalone shell is a winner, combine it with filigree wiring in silver, gold, or bronze and you have a sure thing. The next most popular category seems to be animal motifs; dragonflies or butterflies especially. A simple necklace or earrings with either of these elements is generally a safe bet. Other animal motifs that have been popular are birds, starfish and turtles. Shell medallions have been going strong since 2004 and don’t show any signs of letting up yet; and the possibilities are endless with designs from hanging on a casual cord or chain to dressed up with crystals and cubic zirconia’s they are a sure fire hit.
Multi-function necklaces have become popular in the last few years; women love the idea of being able to wear one necklace 7 different ways. Sea-themed items are terrific for summer. Classic pearl strands are the perfect gift for someone shopping for a daughter, sister or friend. Jet resin jewelry is hot when it has a vintage look. Cross pendant necklaces that are in a vintage style are always a safe bet- and contemporary silver pendants are as well. The plumeria flower when it is combined with a mother of pearl element (for the petals) and the center with cubic zirconia’s is also a fantastic piece. Crystal ball slider lariat style necklaces are top sellers around the holidays because of their dressy nature.
Shades of brown and olive green and red beaded pieces have been extremely popular in the last year as have delicate satin gold elements. Ombre pearls (color gradation of the beads) was immensely popular last winter and are expected to continue in demand. Turquoise beads are a safe bet too. The circular theme has been strong for several years, first it was the eternity diamond pendant, now we are seeing circular linked necklaces which are extremely versatile as long, doubled, high low or as a belt. Add in a hammered style to silver or gold and you have a hot seller for sure. The eternity earring with cubic zirconia’s inside and out are also hot as any women can wear these with jeans and a ponytail for instant glam. Daisy’s and angel wings and hearts have been strong characters and last but not least, little girl and tween girl jewelry is always a surefire thing.
