What is a moonstone?
The recent rise in popularity of moonstones used in jewelry is not surprising based on the history of the moonstone.
Moonstones were used as far back as 100 A.D. when the Romans thought that they were formed from moon light. In India of long ago and present day, people considered it a symbol of prosperity and good luck. Some Indian women attach the stones the inside of their skirts as they believe it will bring them increased fertility. The birthstone of Gemini’s, they are considered a sacred stone in India.
What is it about a moonstone that is so alluring?
The mysterious play of shimmering, reflective light from the moonstone makes it alluring and very beautiful. When the stone is moved playfully in the light, the stone shows an opalescent luster and has a beautiful blue sheen that captivates the eye of the beholder.
In nature, the moonstone’s qualities are hidden. It is when the stone cutter begins to shape the stone that the shimmering elegance begins to shine forth. It is often carved with a moon face.
The legends and beliefs associated with moonstones provide the owner with unusual qualities. Used frequently in promoting love, it can help reconcile lovers and open hearts. The gemstone can promote tenderness and bring happiness into its environment.
Moonstones come from a variety of places, but Sri Lanka seems to be the center of production. The composition of the stone is potassium aluminum silicates, a feldspar mineral. Blue is the most desirable color but it can also be found in grey, white, pink, green or brown. It is a relatively soft stone (a hardness of 6) and can be scratched easily.
Blue moonstones combined with sterling silver make beautiful necklaces, pendants and earrings. Many women love the way they look and feel while they are wearing them.
